Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature outside is 67.3 degrees.
Expect a high in the low 80’s today with showers and thunderstorms likely this afternoon. The chance for rain ranges between 60% and 80% depending on which weather website you view. Tomorrow’s forecast is almost identical. Friday will continue to be cooler with a lower chance for rain.
Little River is flowing at 132 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.69 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 116 cfs. The water temperature is 68.9 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing at or above normal.
Though the streams have cooled some, it would be best to fish higher where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the mid-60’s. Fishing conditions are good in the mountains, especially for August. Dry flies and nymphs will work. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more.
Lowland river fishing conditions are better than what we normally see in August though they are flowing low. Fish the deeper pools with top water flies, streamers or nymphs. It will be mostly sunny today so fish the shaded areas or go early or late.
There will be generation at the dams I checked later this morning so you may want to go early. You may be able to work with these release schedules in most cases, at least for a while. It looks like they will be generating at Norris Dam all day.
Go early to the lakes and fish until the sun is on the water and shaded banks can’t be found. Foam floating flies, poppers and hair bugs should work. If not, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for thunderstorms, especially later today.
Generally, fishing conditions have been good. Yesterday was ideal, but not many fishermen were out and about. We were slow at the shop which was unusual. The fly fishing industry has had a big year, and we have too. Yesterday was probably just a fluke.
We probably won’t be complaining about the weather over the next ten days. There will be a few hot days, but rainfall should be plentiful according to the weather forecast. Friday and Saturday may be dry but rain chances increase again next week. High temperatures are predicted to be in the 80’s most days. Cooler days and nights are not far off. It will be September before we know it.
The average high temperature in September is 80 degrees. The average low is 55 degrees. October brings us an average high of 71 degrees with an average low of 43 degrees. October is usually dry.
We all love typical Fall fishing. I am looking forward to that.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
