Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature outside is 67.3 degrees.
It will be sunny at hot today and tomorrow. Highs will be near 90 degrees with lows in the 60’s. No rain is predicted this weekend.
Little River is flowing at 103 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.57 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 135 cfs. The water temperature is 69.6 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing near normal. Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are flowing slightly above normal.
Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Though most streams are flowing near normal, the water levels are low, which is normal in August. Fish the broken water in riffles, plunge pools and deep runs. Dress to blend with the forest and stay hidden from the trout. You will catch more if you do that. Dry flies and nymphs will work. A dry and nymph dropper rig is a good choice. Try a foam beetle with a Green Weenie dropper.
Most lowland rivers are flowing low, which is typical during the Summer months. It will be sunny this weekend. Go early or late when the sun is off the water or fish shaded areas. Poppers, hair bugs or foam floating flies should work. If not, try nymphs or streamers.
There are some tailwater fishing choices today, especially early. You can plan a day of fishing around the generation schedules at some tailwaters. Check the schedules on the TVA website from the links below.
I would go early if you plan to fish on a lake. Get there at daybreak and fish until shaded banks can’t be found. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies should work. If they don’t, switch to deeper running flies. Streamers or swimming nymphs are good options.
It is going to be sunny and hot this weekend with no thunderstorms expected. You might consider taking your canoe or kayak to one of the many lakes in the area. Paddle up a creek and find shade. There you can also find solitude and fish all day. Tie on some small poppers or foam floating flies and fish for bluegill or shellcrackers. You may catch some largemouth or smallmouth bass too. You can go places a boat can’t or most boaters won’t.
You could do the same thing on some lowland rivers. Little River is a good example. I would go to the lower reaches of the rivers where they are deeper. Go with a friend and plan a shuttle with two vehicles. What a nice way to spend the day, either in a secluded creek embayment on a lake or slowly drifting down a river.
If you get hot, jump in the river or lake and cool off.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
