Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:57 am, the temperature outside is 69.1 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy today with a good chance for thunderstorms at 60%. We could get over an inch of rain today and tonight. The high temperature will be in the mid 80’s today.
Little River is flowing at 78.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.45 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 128 cfs. The water temperature is 70.7 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the Smokies are flowing near or slightly above normal. Rain may cause rivers to rise today in some watersheds.
The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. As the streams are flowing low right now, trout will be hiding in the broken water, in riffles, plunge pools and deep runs. Dry flies and nymphs will work. Stealth is paramount to your success. Don’t let the trout see you. You will catch more.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Fish the deeper pools with poppers, hair bugs or foam floating flies. If they don’t work for you, switch to streamers or nymphs. It should be partly cloudy today, which is a benefit. And, some rivers may rise and become stained.
Check the TVA website to see the projected flows on your favorite tailwater. Several schedules look good for wade and boating opportunities today. It appears they will be generating around the clock on the Clinch River today.
Lake fishing is fair. Watch for thunderstorms if you go today. There may be overcast skies at times, which will be beneficial. I would still go early and start with poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies. If that does not work, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs.
I added a new Firehole Sticks hook to our inventory, and when I saw this one, I immediately thought about its uses for warmwater flies though it was designed with trout in mind. It is a short hook with a very wide gape. I would use this hook to tie small Puglisi Threadfin Shad patterns for sure. The Firehole reference number is 637.
I think it would be perfect for tying a rabbit fur dragonfly swimming nymph. For that purpose, I would tie a pair of black bead chain eyes on top, near the eye for weight and to invert the hook. Tie in rabbit fur cut from a magnum rabbit strip for the tail, dub a body and tie in more fur for a collar. Add some sili legs too, for more action. You can tie these in many colors. I like short wide gaped hooks and this is one that looks perfect to me for many uses. They are available in sizes #6 down to a #22, so midges are also a possibility.
I photographed the box and hook and added this to our online store yesterday. You can see it by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
