Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature outside is 69.1 degrees.
Thunderstorms dropped rain in the area yesterday. We got 1.12 inches in Townsend while the Knoxville Airport reported .73 inches.
Thunderstorms are possible today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. It will be partly sunny today. We have a good chance for rain almost every day this week.
Little River is flowing at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 127 cfs. The water temperature is 68.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at exactly median flow this morning, 248 cfs or 1.68 feet at the Sevierville gauge.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 392 cfs, 1.64 feet, compared to median flow of 262 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 184 cfs, 1.29 feet, compared to median flow of 110 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 77.4 cfs, 2.48 feet, compared to median flow of 56 cfs.
Streams are flowing well for August. That trend should continue all week with more rain expected. The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Dries and nymphs will work.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal today. Some could be stained, especially further downstream from the mountains where muddy tributaries are be entering the rivers. If you see that, drive further upstream to fish.
Tailwater trout fishing opportunities are limited today, especially later when TVA will be generating at some dams. Check the TVA website to see what your options are.
Lake fishing is fair to good. It will be overcast at times today which is helpful. Fish the shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs. If they are not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. I would go early, at daybreak.
It is going to be hot today and tomorrow. The long term forecast indicates cooler temperatures are coming our way along with good chances for rain through August 25th. Then, we have September to anticipate with even cooler temperatures. Historical averages in September are a high of 80 degrees and a low of 55 degrees. I am looking forward to that.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
