Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:57 am, the temperature outside is 68.5 degrees.
It will be hot today with a high temperature in the high 80’s with a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Cooler air will move into the area tomorrow, bringing with it a higher chance for thunderstorms. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the low 80’s and that trend will last through the weekend. Rain chances are high through Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 85.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.49 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 119 cfs. The water temperature is 71.6 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing below normal this morning. Tellico River, Oconalluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are flowing at or slightly above median flow.
Fish the higher elevation streams where the water is cooler today. Fish the broken water in riffles, plunge pools and runs. Dress to blend with the forest to help you stay hidden from the trout. Dry flies and nymphs will work.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Cast to shaded areas with foam floating flies, hair bugs or poppers. It will likely be overcast later today, which will improve fishing conditions. Fishing will likely be fair.
Check the TVA website to hopefully find angler friendly flows on your favorite tailwater. There are some opportunities, especially early today. It appears they will be generating all day on the Norris Dam and sluicing at South Holston Dam.
Lake fishing will be fair. You may want to go early and plan on fishing until late morning. Cast to the shaded banks using foam floating flies, poppers or hair bugs. If they are not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. Cloud cover may improve lake fishing this afternoon. You may want to plan a later lake fishing outing today. Be watchful for thunderstorms this afternoon.
Cooler temperatures and rain will hopefully improve fishing conditions in the mountains and lowland rivers in the coming days. Heavy rain is possible, so we may see high water at times.
It will be much cooler at night next week beginning Monday, with lows in the low 60’s. Daytime temps will be in the low 80’s. If these predictions turn out to be correct, stream temperatures will fall, improving fishing further. Rain chances are predicted to be fairly high most days next week.
I spent most of the day yesterday with Dave Chouinard and Josh Graffam. Dave is our Umpqua Sales Representative and Josh is the National Sales Manager at Umpqua. Dave lives in Florida. Josh lives in Colorado.
Josh is a trout Euro nymphing expert who is also a member of the USA fly fishing team. He was the national grand champion in 2013 and has competed around the world with the team. I think he told me he won 6th in the world one year, but I can’t remember that for a fact. We did a lot of talking yesterday. I really like Josh.
Dave has been working with us for about 15 years. He is a very good friend and it was great to spend the day with him.
We are planning our fly selection and purchases for 2021. Most flies are ordered the year before they are delivered and sold at fly shops. They are not made by machines. They are hand tied by people.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
