Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature outside is 67.5 degrees.
Heavy rain fell yesterday and last night. The Knoxville Airport reported 2.32 inches while in Townsend, 1.35 inches fell at a personal weather station near our home.
It will be mostly cloudy early today, then become sunny later this afternoon. The chance for rain is low today. Expect a high temperature in the low to mid 80’s today, falling to the mid 60’s tonight.
Little River is flowing at 271 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.15 feet on the gauge. Yesterday, the river rose to 2.75 feet. Median flow for this date is 133 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 812 cfs, 2.58 feet, compared to median flow of 298 cfs. The river is receding.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 476 cfs, 1.79 feet, compared to median flow of 273 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 70.1 cfs, 2.44 feet, compared to median flow of 53 cfs.
Water levels in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal but all are receding. Many are flowing at a very good fishable level. Little River is flowing perfect. Fishing conditions are good in many streams. Dry flies and nymphs will work. This may be a very good fishing day in the Smokies, better than we have seen in a while.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Some are flowing quite a bit higher than normal. You may find stained water further downstream from where the rivers leave the mountains due to runoff in some tributaries. If you encounter stained water, drive further upstream and look for better conditions.
You should be able to work with the generation schedules on some tailwaters today. Go through the list of schedules at the dams to see what is available to you today.
This may be a good lake fishing day, especially early. If we do have cloud cover, as is predicted, that will be beneficial. Some creek embayments may be stained. Hit the banks with hair bugs, foam floating flies or poppers. If topwater flies are not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs and fish deeper. I would go early.
Overall, this will be a good fishing day. If it is actually cloudy this morning as predicted, all the better. We will enjoy much cooler temperatures today and through the coming days. Hopefully, the water temperatures will fall to a point, where we can fish the lowest elevations in the Smokies soon.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
