Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:07 am, the temperature outside is 64.8 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the mid 80’s, with no rain expected. We are going to enjoy high temperatures in the high 70’s to low 80’s all week after today. Lows will be in the low to mid 60’s through the period. We have a chance for rain every day, tomorrow through Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 141 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.73 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 111 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauges are flowing slightly above normal.
If we do not get too much rain at times, this is going to be a good fishing week in the mountains. Water temperatures will be cooler. Flows will likely be higher. Trout will be actively feeding. Nymphs or dry flies will work for you.
Most lowland rivers are flowing slightly higher than normal. Water levels may fluctuate this week. Water temps will be cooler. It will be sunny today so I would go early or late. Hair bugs, foam floating flies and poppers should work. Cast to the shaded areas after sunrise. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfishes will be found in the deeper pools.
There are a few tailwater fishing options today in east and middle Tennessee. Your options are limited. Check the TVA website from the list below and plan accordingly. Take notice of sluicing notices at some dams.
This is not the best lake fishing day, due to the lack of cloud cover. Go early or late when the sun is off the water. Hair bugs, foam floating flies and poppers should work. If not, try streamers or swimming nymphs.
We will have at least some cloud cover this week, after today. I have always preferred fishing on the lakes and rivers on cloudy days. I believe fish are more likely to be found near the surface when there is no direct sun on the water.
I spend a lot of my time ordering, receiving and stocking the fly tying department. Yesterday, I spent much of the day packaging thread and other spooled tying materials. If you ever wondered who does all of that, it is me. The rewarding part of the task is watching those pegs on the walls fill up. That don’t stay that way long. It is a continuous process. I will spend today ordering.
The fly tying department continues to grow. We are remodeling upstairs this Fall, adding more space for fly tying materials and tools. I am bringing in a new assistant after the remodel. We will build an office for that person.
I am looking forward to both.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
