Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature outside is 65.8 degrees.
Moderate to heavy rainfall fell in the area late yesterday. It was very heavy rain at our home, 1.36” in about one hour.
It will be cool today, partly to mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the upper 70’s. There is a fair chance for more thunderstorms today. It will be slightly warmer tomorrow with a lower chance for rain. Expect a high temperature today in the low 60’s at Mount LeConte and in the low 70’s at Newfound Gap.
Little River is flowing at 173 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.85 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 115 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 989 cfs, 2.79 feet, compared to median flow of 228 cfs at the Sevierville gauge. All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal. Most are at a good fishing level.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. This may be an excellent fishing day in the Smokies. There is a chance some streams will rise and become stained this afternoon though the chance is fairly low.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal where they exit the Park. Little Pigeon River is flowing fairly high but receding. Some rivers may be stained further downstream where tributaries enter. If you see stained water, drive further upstream to fish. It should be overcast much of the day. Fishing could be good in many lowland rivers.
There are several tailwater fishing options today, especially early. Check the TVA website to see what your opportunities are.
If it is actually mostly cloudy as predicted, this may be a very good lake fishing day. I would launch early and fish the banks with topwater flies first. If that is not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. Some creek embayments may be stained by the rain we had in the area yesterday.
You have many choices today. It will be cool and comfortable, even in the valleys. It will be especially cool in the mountains.
After sanitizing the shop this morning, I am going to be off today. My plan is to watch a video by Chris Helm on spinning deer hair. I ordered the DVD earlier this week and it arrived yesterday. Then, I’m going to tie better bass hair bugs and I may take a nap.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
