Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:59 am, the temperature outside is 69.3 degrees.
Short periods of heavy rain fell yesterday afternoon. .26” fell in Townsend while the Knoxville Airport reported .22 inches.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible again today. There is a chance for heavy rain in some storms. The high temperature will be in the low 80’s. It will be warmer tomorrow through Friday with rain expected during the period. Next weekend will be cooler.
Little River is flowing at 205 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.96 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 103 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 859 cfs, 2.64 feet, compared to median flow of 190 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 545 cfs, 1.90 feet, which compares to median flow of 234 cfs for this date.
Tellico River is flowing at 176 cfs, 1.26 feet, compared to median flow of 101 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing near normal. Heavy rain missed that watershed yesterday.
Water levels in the mountains are good. Water temperatures are cooler. It will be mostly cloudy today. Fishing will be good unless the stream you are fishing rises too much, which is possible. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. You may find stained water in some, where lowland tributaries merge. If you do find clear water, fishing will be good for smallmouth bass and other species. Top water flies should produce.
There are some tailwater wade fishing options this morning. TVA will be generating or sluicing at several dams later. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are today.
This may be the perfect lake fishing day due to the expected overcast skies. You may have to avoid a thunderstorm or two. Otherwise, I would plan on using hair bugs, foam floating flies or poppers. Cast to the banks. Switch to sub-surface flies if your top water offering are not working.
I am still tying spun deer hair bass bugs, one each day. Thankfully for me, I’m finally getting better. Those first bugs looked awful. I tied one yesterday I might actually show someone.
I will be ordering and stocking more tools for tying spun deer hair flies. I special ordered one tool for me to try that I found to be essential. It is a Stonefo double edge razor blade holder, used for sculpting spun hair. The tool bends the razor blade to a curved shape and the curve is adjustable.
Another is a Fugly Hair Packer. I bought three hair packers during the past week and found the Fugly to be my favorite. I also ordered a selection of deer hair from Natures Spirit that is very long, called Spinning Hair. We will be stocking that from now on.
I ordered Chris Helm’s DVD on spinning and stacking deer hair. We will be selling those. After watching that DVD, I finally got it. Chris is an old friend of mine who passed away in 2014. I thought it would be tough to watch his DVD. The opposite was true. He left behind a legacy for fly tyers who want to learn this challenging method of fly tying.
Check out yesterday’s fishing report from the archive below to see the bear on our front porch.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
