Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature outside is 70.7 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the mid to upper 80’s. We have a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. The chance for rain increases tomorrow through Saturday. We have a chance for heavy rain Friday night and Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 162 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.81 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 103 cfs. The water temperature is 68.7 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal, but at good fishable levels. Water temperatures are warm in the lowest elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Dry flies and nymphs will work. I would use a black foam beetle with a Green Weenie dropper. Stay hidden from the trout and fish the broken water where they are hiding and waiting for food to drift by in the current.
The lowland rivers should be mostly clear and flowing higher than normal. I saw much of lower Little River downstream from Townsend yesterday and it looked great. Flows were perfect for wading and fishing for smallmouth bass and other species. I would use foam floating flies, poppers and hair bugs first. Switch to streamers or nymphs if they are not working. When the sun is high today, fish the shaded water.
TVA is providing angler friendly flows on many of the tailwaters today. Check the TVA website to see what your options are.
Lake fishing is fair. I would launch early and fish the banks with top water flies. As the sun rises, look for shaded banks to fish. If your top water offering are not working, switch to weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for gamefish feeding on shad early and late when the sun is off the water. If you see that, motor or paddle close and cast small streamers that resemble threadfin shad.
I was off yesterday, getting a routine colonoscopy. Everything went well if you discount the fact that I did not eat or barely slept for 24 hours. I don’t have to go through that again for five years. Don’t be afraid to have one. I have had more than I can count.
I looked at the clock on the wall right before they put me under yesterday morning. It was 7:45 am. When I woke, and it was over, it was 8:15 am. I was in the car with Paula driving at about 8:30 am. The nurse told me to eat a light meal. They always say that. We stopped at Hardees and I ordered enough food for three meals, then devoured it all on the way home.
It’s really not a big deal. They can save your life. Colon cancer is very treatable if it is caught early. I am living proof. I have been getting them on a regular basis since 1982. Don’t put it off!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
