Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:58 am, the temperature outside is 71.2 degrees.
It rained overnight. The Knoxville Airport reports .97 inches fell there. Only .26 inches fell in Townsend. More rain is possible today, especially this afternoon. Expect a high temperature in the low to mid 80’s. The chance for rain continues tonight. Rain chances are low tomorrow and through Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 232 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.07 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 86 cfs. The water temperature is 69.1 degrees this morning. The river is rising.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 419 cfs, 2.00 feet, compared to median flow of 159 cfs. The river did not rise much overnight and it is receding now.
Oconaluftee River is rising. Flow is currently 750 cfs, 2.19 feet, compared to median flow of 208 cfs for this date.
Tellico River rose sharply overnight. Flow is 2,490 cfs, 6.05 feet, compared to median flow of 94 cfs. The river just peaked and is receding.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 135 cfs, 2.73 feet, compared to median flow of 46 cfs. The creek is rising.
I don’t know exactly what to expect today. Fishing could be good. Some streams are fishable while a few others are flowing high and rising. I would wait a while and check the flows before going. And, watch the weather radar to see if storms are approaching.
Nymphing is probably your best choice today.
Some lowland rivers are flowing high and they may be stained. Rain last night was light in some areas and heavy in others. If you live close to the river you intend to fish, drive there and check it out. Otherwise, refer to the flow gauges and make your decision to go or where to go.
I saw a few tailwater fishing opportunities today on the TVA website, especially early. You can expect generation at many dams this afternoon.
Lake fishing is fair. This may be an ideal lake fishing day due to the expected mostly cloudy conditions. I would go fairly early because the chances for thunderstorms are higher this afternoon. You may want to head to the ramp when and if the storms arrive. Start with hair bugs, poppers and foam floating flies. You may do well with those today. If not, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs.
I am ordering fly tying materials and tools like there is no end to this popularity in our fly tying department. There will not be an end. This has become a full time job for me and I am enjoying it very much. We will be knocking out walls and expanding the department in October.
To keep items in stock, I have to monitor the inventory levels regularly. I set maximum levels by item in our computer system based on prior sales. There are some items, especially hooks and tungsten beads, that those levels have been raised as much as four times what I used to stock earlier this year.
Whiting Farms hackle has been hard to get. I placed an order five weeks ago that has not arrived. The one before that took a month. And, the one before that one took two months to ship after the order was placed. I need to do a better job planning ahead, months ahead.
All of our other fly tying suppliers have improved their fulfillment rate and turn-around time in the past few weeks. That has been very helpful to me.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
