Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature outside is 72.1 degrees.
Today will be warm and humid, with a high temperature in the mid-80’s. We have a fairly low chance for showers and thunderstorms.
Little River is flowing at 264 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.16 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 91 cfs. The water temperature is 68.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing well at 530 cfs, 2.17 feet, compared to median flow of 162 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 663 cfs, 2.07 feet, which compares to median flow of 222 cfs for this date.
Tellico River is flowing at 599 cfs, 2.36 feet, compared to median flow of 89 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 106 cfs, 2.61 feet, which compares to median flow of 46 cfs.
Stream flows in the Smoky Mountains are excellent, especially considering this is September 1st, when water levels are usually very low. Water temperatures are warm in the lowest elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Dry flies and nymph will work for you. Fishing conditions are very good.
Lowland rivers look great, with very nice flows. I drove by Little River on the way home from work yesterday and I was tempted to just pull over and watch the river run by. It looked that good.
You should do well fishing these rivers, for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies should work for you. Fish the shaded deeper pools and runs.
You have some tailwater fishing options today, whether you are wading or floating. Visit the TVA website to see what opportunities you have today.
Lake fishing is fair. Go early when the sun is off the water. If you are lucky, you might take advantage of the partly cloudy conditions today. It is possible that will extend your day, fishing with top water flies. Of course, if the floating flies are not working, switch to streamers or nymphs.
It will be cool at night, beginning this weekend. Next week looks even better on the long term forecasts I saw this morning. We will see highs in the 70’s and lows in the low 60’s next week. That is going to feel like September should. It will feel like Fall. We are all ready for that to happen.
I talked to the folks at Whiting Farms yesterday, twice. They told me the three orders I have been waiting for would ship immediately. If that is the case, I should get about $3,000 worth of chicken feathers delivered this week. When they arrive, I am going to order more, about the same amount. When those come in, I’ll do it again.
I have been ordering from most of our fly tying suppliers weekly this year and sometimes more often. This has been a great fly tying year at the shop, by far the best we’ve had in over 25 years.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
