Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature outside is 72.0 degrees.
Heavy rain fell yesterday morning in Townsend, recording a total of .47 inches in a short period of time. It will be hot and humid today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. The chance for rain today is low. It will be partly sunny. Tomorrow will be warm with a greater chance for thunderstorms.
Little River is flowing at 209 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.00 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 82 cfs. The water temperature is 68.7 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smoky Mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal. Water levels are very good for fishing. Water temperatures will be warm today in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Dry flies and nymphs will work. A foam beetle with a Green Weenie dropper is a good choice. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding. Stealth is essential to your success. Avoid being seen by the trout and you will catch more.
Most lowland rivers have good flows today. Fish the shaded areas with poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs for smallmouth bass and warmwater species. There is the potential for overcast conditions today at times. That will be beneficial for angling, especially when using top water flies.
Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fly fishing options are today. You have several options, especially early in the day. TVA or the Corps will be generating at many dams later.
This should be a fair to good lake fishing day. It is supposed to be overcast at times but I would not count in it. Go early when the sun is off the water and cast to the banks with topwater flies or poppers. Switch to streamers or swimming nymphs if the fish are not taking your surface offerings. It is going to be hot and humid, so you may be tempted to pull your boat out and go home this afternoon.
The weather forecast looks good for the weekend. It will be cooler with a low chance for rain, Saturday through Monday. The chances for rain are low through September 16th according to the long term forecast I am reading right now. It looks like we may be entering a dry spell. It will be cool later next week. Highs in the 70’s with lows in the low 60’s are predicted beginning Friday September 11th.
Fall fishing can be excellent in the mountains, if the water is not too low. Water temperatures will fall, allowing for fishing in the low elevations and larger rivers. It will not be long before brown and brook trout will be exhibiting spawning behavior. September can be dry. October is our driest month of the year.
