Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature is 66.7 degrees.
High temperatures will be in the low to mid 80’s today through Saturday, with lows in the 60’s at night. There is a fair chance for rain today. We have a greater chance for thunderstorms tomorrow through Sunday. Cooler air will arrive Sunday, with a high temperature in the upper 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 119 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 80 cfs. The water temperature is 66.4 degrees this morning.
Water levels are pretty much near or above normal in the Park.
Dry flies or nymphs will work for you. Trout will be actively feeding. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding. Stay hidden and get a good drift. Try a dry and dropper rig with a Green Weenie trailing your dry fly.
Lowland Rivers are flowing at normal for this point in September. It will be sunny today so fishing will probably be best early or late depending on which river you are fishing. Hair bugs, poppers or foam floating flies should work for smallmouth bass and other species found in these rivers. Cast to the shaded areas.
There are some tailwater wade or boat fishing options today but not below all dams. TVA plans to generate all day at Norris Dam, but there are other opportunities. Check the TVA website to plan your day.
Lake fishing is fair. Go early and fish the shaded banks with poppers, hair bugs or foam floating flies. If that isn’t working switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. There should be less boaters on the lakes than you have seen in a while, now that Labor Day weekend has passed.
We will enjoy fall-like weather next week. High temperatures in the upper 70’s to 80 degrees are predicted beginning Monday and continuing through September 24th, according to the long term forecast. We will see lows in the low 60’s dipping to the 50’s through the period. Rain chances will be low beginning next Tuesday and lasting through the 27th if the long term forecast is correct.
Water temperatures will fall. Water levels may be low, which is usual in late September and October. October is historically our driest month of the year. Average rainfall is only 2.67 inches here in October. Lower water temperatures will allow for good fishing in the lower elevations and larger rivers.
I am looking forward to Fall. A change will be nice.
Three good friends of mine are heading to Yellowstone next week. They are driving and will be tent camping in the Park. They will be gone three weeks. The tent has a wood stove, which they will need. They are also taking a generator and a battery powered chainsaw to cut fallen limbs for the stove. What a fishing trip! I have been with them and camped in the same place. They are excited. I am excited for them.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
