Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 63.0 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature around 80 degrees, dropping to the low 60’s tonight. Tomorrow’s forecast is similar. Rain and much cooler air will move into the Tennessee Valley Thursday. Expect highs in the low to mid-70’s through the weekend. We will enjoy lows in the 40’s this weekend. Expect rain Thursday through Friday. There is the potential for heavy rain Thursday.
The low temperature is predicted to be 39 degrees at Mount LeConte Sunday night.
Little River is flowing at 105 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 76 cfs. The water temperature is 68.4 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Normal is low in September. Stealth and presentation are essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest and get a good drift with your dry flies or nymphs. Fish the broken water where trout are hiding.
Water temperatures will fall later this week. We will see temps in the trout’s preferred range in the low elevation larger rivers.
Lowland rivers are flowing fairly low but higher than normal. Fishing is good for smallmouth bass and other species, using top water flies, streamers or nymphs. It will be sunny today, so go early or late when the sun is off the water. If you are fishing a canopied river, cast to shaded areas in the deeper pools when the sun is high.
There are a few tailwater wade fishing options today in East and Middle Tennessee. Check the TVA website to plan your day.
It will be sunny today so I would plan on fishing the lakes early or late. Cast hair bugs, foam floating flies or poppers to the dimly lit banks if you are fishing for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass or bluegill. As the sun rises higher, when shaded banks are hard to find, you will probably need to fish deeper with streamers or swimming nymphs.
The trees are starting to turn and they are shedding leaves. Acorns are falling. Spiders are actively building webs in the forest. It will be chilly in the mornings later this week. In the high elevations, it will be cold at night. Fall will officially begin September 22nd, a week from now.
Football season has begun.
I have been looking forward to this for a while. It is time for a change.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
