Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature is 66.7 degrees.
Rain has been falling since 3:00 am, accumulating to .17 inches so far. Rain will continue through early tomorrow morning. We may get up to one inch according to one weather website. Saturday will be mostly cloudy. Sunday will be sunny.
High temperatures will be in the low 70’s today and through the weekend. Expect a low in the low 60’s tonight, with lows in the low 50’s tomorrow and through the weekend. Next week, low temps are predicted to be in the 40’s, Sunday through Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 93.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.56 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 72 cfs. The water temperature is 68.0 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains that have USGS gauges are flowing low, but at or above normal for this date.
Fishing will be good today unless we get too much rain which may cause rising and possibly stained water at times. That seems unlikely at this point. Water temperatures will fall over the next few days, improving trout fishing in the lower elevation larger rivers. Dry flies and nymphs are working.
Lowland river fishing will be good today, barring high or stained water. It will be overcast today, which is beneficial for anglers. Try hair bugs, foam floating flies or poppers in the deeper pools and runs. Nymphs or streamers may work well too.
Check the TVA website from the links below to determine your tailwater fishing options today. There are a few, especially early.
This may be a good lake fishing day if you don’t mind getting wet. I would start with top water flies, then switch to streamers or swimming nymphs if the surface activity is slow. I think this will be a good day for casting foam floating flies, poppers or hair bugs to the banks thanks to the overcast skies.
We will enjoy Fall-like fishing over the next few days and probably though the Fall. The 10-day forecast predicts a few warm days, but the nights will be cool through October 1st. Low temperatures are predicted to be in the 40’s and 50’s through the period. This is what we have all been waiting for.
Brown and brook trout will begin their pre-spawn activity soon. Before we know it, they will be spawning. Leaves are beginning to turn now. The days are shorter. This is my second favorite time of the year, behind Spring.
UPDATE 7:10 AM - FAIRLY HEAVY RAIN IS FALLING. WEATHER RADAR INDICATES MORE IS COMING. CHECK THE USGS GAUGE SITES BEFORE GOING FISHING IN THE SMOKES OR LOWLAND RIVERS. SOME RIVERS ARE RISING NOW. WE MAY GET MORE RAIN THAN WAS INITIALLY PREDICTED EARLY THIS MORNING.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
