1.02 inches of rain fell in Townsend yesterday, while the Knoxville Airport recorded .21 inches.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 70’s, falling to the low 50’s tonight. It will be mostly cloudy tomorrow with a high of about 70 degrees, falling to the low 50’s again at night. Sunday will be sunny with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the mid 40’s Sunday night. There is no chance for rain this weekend. What we will enjoy is beautiful Fall weather.
Little River is flowing at 193 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.95 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 70 cfs. The water temperature is 66.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 737 cfs, 2.48 feet, compared to median flow of 126 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 494 cfs or 1.82 feet, which compares to median flow of 196 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 187 cfs, 1.30 feet, compared to median flow of 69 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 85.2 cfs, 2.51 feet, compared to median flow of 41 cfs.
Fishing conditions are ideal in the Smoky Mountains, especially for mid-September. Water levels are excellent. Water temperatures will be falling to the trout’s preferred range, even in the lowest elevations. It will be overcast or partly cloudy today and tomorrow. All of these conditions equate to good fishing this weekend.
It will be comfortable. It will feel like Fall should.
Trout will be taking dry flies and nymphs.
Lowland river fishing conditions are good as well. They are all flowing higher than normal. Combine that with cloud cover today and tomorrow, and this will be a great time to fish for smallmouth bass, rock bass and other species. These fish are taking poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies. Streamers and nymphs will probably work well too.
If you check the TVA website you will find several tailwater fishing options today. Wade fishing will be possible on some. Boat fishing will be your only option on others.
Today and tomorrow will be good lake fishing days due to the predicted cloud cover. There will be no storms to be concerned about. The wind will be calm to 10 mph. Casting poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs to the banks should work if there is plenty of cloud cover. Streamers and swimming nymphs are another option, especially if the sun pops out at times.
We have been blessed with rain this month, keeping water levels higher than normal. Last year at this time, we had received no rain at the Airport since September 1st. Temperatures have been cool. Yesterday, the high temperature was 78 degrees, compared to 94 degrees on the same day last year.
Next week will be cool and probably dry, with highs in the 70’s and lows dipping to the 40’s to mid-50’s at night. Tuesday will be the first day of Fall and it is going to feel like it.
I don’t know about you but I’m going to unbox and hang up my Winter outdoor clothes this weekend and put away the Summer stuff until Spring.
