Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 55.9 degrees.
It will be cool and comfortable today with a high temperature in the low 70’s, falling to the low 50’s tonight. It will be mostly cloudy today. No rain is in the forecast. Sunday will be sunny with a high in the low 70’s, dropping to the upper 40’s at night.
Little River is flowing at 146 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.78 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 70 cfs. The water temperature is 64.2 degrees.
Most if not all streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures have fallen and that will continue each night over the next few days.
You could not ask for better fishing conditions in the Smokies in the month of September. Water temps and flows are very good, compared to normal. Dry flies and nymphs will catch trout. Stealth is paramount to your success. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal and fishing conditions are very good today. I would cast hair bugs, foam floating flies or poppers for smallmouth bass and other species. You may do well using streamers and nymphs too.
You have options on many tailwaters today, especially if you are boating. Visit the newly designed TVA website by clicking from the links below to see where and when to fish below the dams in East and Middle Tennessee.
Lake fishing conditions are perfect. It will be overcast at times. It will not be windy. No rain is predicted. Cast hair bugs, foam floating flies or poppers to the banks. Try streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for surface activity. Shad follow plankton to the surface on overcast days. Game fish follow the shad.
I hope it really is overcast today. Sometimes I am fooled by the weather websites. We are all enjoying these cooler temperatures. The long term forecast indicates this trend will continue through early October. It may be dry for a while. October is our driest month of the year.
I am still tying deer hair bass bugs every day. I tie one each evening and have for about a month. This is something I always wanted to try but I never stuck with it. They take about 1 hour to tie. I don’t think I have ever enjoyed fly tying as much as I do now and I have been tying most of my life. The bugs are looking better each time I tie one. All it takes is practice. If I can do it, anyone can.
You need the right tools and good materials. By all means, buy a Fugly hair packer and some good serrated scissors. We sell a tool that holds a double edge razor blade, to trim the hair flat underneath the bug, so there is clearance for a large gap (gape) for better hookups. I am glad I bought one of those. We stock Natures Spirit Spinning Deer Hair in many colors. That stuff is awesome.
I have been adding new colors of rubber legs to our inventory and there will be more coming soon. I use rubber legs for tails (4 strands) on all poppers. They give your poppers plenty of movement and action and they are durable.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
