Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 58.6 degrees.
The remnants of Tropical system Beta is bringing rain to the Tennessee Valley today, and it is predicted to last through tomorrow. Light rain has been falling in Townsend since 1:04 am, with the total amounting to .20 inches so far. Heavy rain is possible at times. The high temperature today will be in the mid-60’s.
We may get one to two inches of rain tonight. The rain and thunderstorms will end Friday night. Expect partly cloudy skies Saturday with a high temperature in the upper 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 89.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.54 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 80 cfs. The water temperature is 59.4 degrees.
So far this morning, the USGS gauges are not showing much if any rise in the mountain streams. That will likely change later. If you go, you may find rising and stained water at some point today. If we get as much rain as they say is possible, you will certainly find those conditions tomorrow.
Nymphs will probably work best today. I would try San Juan Worms or Squirmy Worms either as a dropper off your dry fly or fished weighted and alone. Other nymph patterns may work as well.
Take your rain gear. From what I saw on the radar a few minutes ago, we are in for a long period of continuous rain unless this system moves to the north.
Lowland River fishing may be good at least for a while this morning. There is a high chance these rivers will rise at some point and become stained. Nymphs and streamers will probably work best though you might try surface flies and see what happens.
I do not see many wade fishing opportunities on the area tailwaters. There are angler friendly flows predicted at some dams in East and Middle Tennessee. Check the TVA website to see what your options are. They are limited.
Lake fishing may be good if you don’t mind spending the day in your boat with rain falling on you continuously. You will probably be out there almost alone. Take some warm clothes to layer under your rain suit. It is going to be chilly. It will be overcast which is one almost compelling reason to go.
Light rain is still falling. It has not stopped. Now we have .26 inches in the gauge.
I bet this will be an excellent fly tying day. I know it will.
Whatever you choose to do, have a good one and thank you for being here with us.
