Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 61.5 degrees.
The rain began at 1:00 am yesterday and I don’t think it ever stopped. Rainfall was light yesterday, then heavy rain fell overnight. Since 1:00 am yesterday, 3.48” was recorded at a personal weather station near our home. I checked two others nearby and they both recorded over four inches during the period.
More rain is likely today, before ending and clearing tonight. A thunderstorm is possible this afternoon. The high temperature today will be around 70 degrees. It will be partly sunny tomorrow with a high in the mid to upper 70’s. Sunday will be partly sunny with a low chance for showers and a high temperature in the upper 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 1,450 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.94 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 60.4 degrees this morning. The river is rising quickly. Flow is already a record for this date. The prior record was 640 cfs set in 2006.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 4,410 cfs, 5.31 feet which compares to median flow of 121 cfs. The current flow is a record for this date at 607 cfs in 1975. The river is rising.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,230 cfs, 2.76 feet, compared to median flow of 196 cfs. The river is rising. This is another record, last set in 2006 at 1,090 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 2,290 cfs, 5.72 feet, compared to median flow of 69 cfs for this date. The river is rising sharply. The highest flow for Tellico River on this date was 2,140 cfs set in 1929.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 554 cfs, 3.83 feet, compared to median flow of 38 cfs. The record flow on this date was 205 cfs set in 2006.
The streams in the Smokies are blown out. Wading is not recommended. The streams are still rising quickly. More rain is possible. Whitewater kayakers are probably loading their boats right now.
Lowland river fishing is out of the question.
Believe it or not, there are some tailwater fly fishing options in east and middle Tennessee. You may find stained water where tributaries enter the rivers. Check the TVA website to see what you think.
Lakes could be stained. Some may not be stained.
This is certainly a good fly tying day, or in my case, a good day to work at the shop.
We met with Park Burson yesterday. Park works for Orvis and Scientific Anglers. He is a super guy. We have been good friends for over 25 years. When we first met he was very young, in his 20’s.
I did not have time to see all of the new gear from Orvis yesterday. Daniel told me Park showed them some new fishing packs and other gear that looked great. Ovis is a good company to work with. We have partnered together for a long time and the relationship has been mutually beneficial. I have been an Orvis fan since the 1970’s.
