Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 54.9 degrees.
It has been raining in Townsend since 8:24 pm last night. So far, .99 inches has fallen. More rain is predicted today. The high temperature will be in the high 50’s today, falling to the mid to upper 40’s tonight. It will be sunny and dry tomorrow and through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 769 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.07 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 61.7 degrees this morning. The river has been rising quickly but it appears to have peaked.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 549 cfs or 2.20 feet on the Sevierville gauge. Median flow for this date is 122 cfs. The river is barely rising right now.
Oconaluftee River is rising but not much so far. Flow is 551 cfs, 1.91 feet, compared to median flow of 207 cfs.
Tellico River is rising quickly. Flow is 1,310 cfs, 3.89 feet, compared to median flow of 74 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is rising slowly. Flow is currently 109 cfs, 2.62 feet, compared to median flow of 41 cfs.
West Prong of Little River at Gatlinburg is rising fast. Flow there is 265 cfs, 4.23 feet, compared to median flow of 14 cfs. This is a fairly new gauge site with very little historical data. That is why I do not reference this gauge often. But, it may indicate what we will see later in the Little Pigeon River downstream.
It is not likely we will see anything like we had last week in this rain event. Some watersheds are getting more rain than others in the Park. Little River has been affected. Right now, it would not be safe to wade. The river is probably stained. I would wait a while before going and keep an eye on the gauges. You may find some fishable rivers later, or maybe not.
Some lowland rivers are flowing high and likely stained. Others are not, at least not yet. Again, I would wait a while before going fishing to see what affect this rain has on those rivers.
TVA and the Corps will be generating today at most dams in their system. I clicked on several TVA pages and saw almost no tailwater wade fishing options today. Boat fishing may be fine at some. Check the website to make your own determination.
This could be a nasty lake fishing day depending on where you go. Conditions may improve later. The heaviest rain appears to be moving east of several impoundments. Watch the radar. The weather may be fine on your favorite lake.
Heavy rain is not likely today though we have been fooled before, as recently as last week. The weather forecast looks great beginning tomorrow and lasting through the weekend. My opinion is, fishing conditions will be excellent this weekend and probably before. It is going to be cool, and there is almost no chance for rain after today, through Sunday. It should be sunny to mostly sunny every day. High temperatures will be in the 60’s with lows in the 40’s.
It is Fall and it is going to feel like Fall.
