Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature is 54.7 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm again today with a high temperature near 80 degrees. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy and slightly cooler with a high in the mid-70’s. Rain will move into the area Friday night, and continuing through Sunday night. It will be cooler this weekend with highs in the low to mid 70’s and lows in the 60’s.
One weather website predicts there is the potential for heavy rain Saturday night and Sunday. There is no mention of heavy rain on other weather sites.
Little River is flowing at 156 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.82 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 57 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are very good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. More important than fly patterns are stealth and fly presentation. Good dry fly choices are Stimulators and Elk Hair Caddis. Green Weenie, Pink Weenie, Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, Tellico and other reasonable nymph patterns will work.
We should see gradual warming in the lowland rivers today, which will improve the fishing. It will be overcast much of the day tomorrow, offering us better conditions. Streamers and nymphs will work. I would certainly try poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies too. Cast to the shaded areas during the day if the sun is on the water.
There are not many wade fishing options on the tailwaters today. Don’t be fooled by the generation schedule at Cherokee Dam. TVA has been sluicing but that is not mentioned on their website. Freddy sent me an email yesterday to make me and you aware of this.
Lake fishing is fair to good. Tomorrow might be your best day to go thanks to the predicted cloud cover. Still, I would go early and cast to the banks with streamers and swimming nymphs. Try top water flies too. Hair bugs, poppers and foam floating flies may work for you.
This weekend is a holiday weekend, which usually means we will see a lot of people in the Smokies. Visitation in the mountains is also high in October for leaf season. That may not be the case this weekend due to the predicted rain. Traffic has been fairly high in Townsend so far this month. We have been somewhat busy at the shop.
I bet the campgrounds are having a great Fall. Camping has been very popular this year as have all outdoor activities.
We are going to enjoy at least a couple of more beautiful days this week before the rain arrives.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
