Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 65.5 degrees.
Over two inches of rain has fallen in Townsend since night before last. More rain is predicted today, with a high temperature in the low 70’s. Showers will persist through early tonight. It will be cloudy early tomorrow, then becoming sunny with a high in the mid to upper 70’s.
Little River is rising and flowing at 287 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 74 cfs. The water temperature is 60.4 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,280 cfs, 3.09 feet, compared to median flow of 141 cfs for this date. The river is rising.
Oconaluftee River is rising sharply at 1,540 cfs, or 3.08 feet at the Birdtown gauge. Median flow for this date is 197 cfs.
Tellico River is rising this morning. Flow at the Tellico Plains gauge is 298 cfs, 1.65 feet, compared to median flow of 69 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is rising. Flow is currently 687 cfs, 4.07 feet, compared to median flow of 42 cfs.
West Prong of the Little Pigeon River at Gatlinburg is rising quickly. Flow is 1,180 cfs, or 5.98 feet.
Some streams in the Smokies are flowing very high while others are not. Little River is fishable now, but that may change later as it is rising. More rain today may affect stream levels. Some streams are probably stained.
You could find some rivers and streams that are fishable, but overall, most are too high right now to safely wade. If you do find fishable water, heavily weighted nymphs or streamers will probably work best.
Fishing conditions in the Smokies are certainly not ideal today.
Lowland rivers are flowing much higher than normal. Many are likely stained.
You might find a suitable tailwater fishing opportunity today, depending on how far you are willing to drive and if you are wading or boat fishing. Look at the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Lake fishing may be fair to good today if you don’t mind fishing in the rain at times. It may be breezy, especially early today. It should be overcast all day. Streamers and swimming nymphs should work. You might do well with top water flies. If you are off work for the holiday tomorrow, you may want to wait until then to go. It is supposed to be overcast for a while and the wind is predicted to be calm.
Jack and I are going to Maryville tomorrow morning to buy materials to remodel and enlarge the fly tying department. The project should take two to three weeks to complete. I will be helping him each day, while also keeping the fly tying department stocked. I expect to be working seven long days a week for a while. I don’t mind. I am really looking forward to this.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
