Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 67.3 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy early this morning, then clearing later. Expect a high in the mid-60’s today. It will be sunny and warmer tomorrow and Thursday with a high in the mid 70’s both days.
Little River is flowing at 264 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.22 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 74 cfs. The water temperature is 61.3 degrees this morning at the low elevation gauge site.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 694 cfs or 2.42 feet. Median flow for this date is 122 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 765 cfs, 2.21 feet, compared to median flow of 190 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 305 cfs, 1.67 feet, which compares to median flow of 70 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 187 cfs, 2.92 feet, compared to median flow of 42 cfs.
Stream flows in the mountains are much higher than normal. October is historically our driest month of the year and streams are normally flowing very low. Many are fishable, with Little River being one of them. Some streams are swift so be careful wading. Water temperatures are excellent in the low to mid elevations.
I would plan to use weighted nymph rigs though dry flies might work too. Getting a good drift and staying hidden from the trout are more important to your success than fly choices.
Most lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal and some are swift. Wading may be limited in the river you intend to fish today. Wade in safe water and use weighted streamers or nymph rigs. Try top water flies too. The rivers are fairly warm. Smallmouth bass will be fairly active, as well as other lowland river species.
I saw a couple of generation schedules you may be able to work with if you intend to fish on a tailwater today. I did not check all dams. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
This may be a fair lake fishing day. It will be overcast early which is good. It may be slightly breezy at times today. Go early and fish until the sun is high. Streamers or swimming nymphs will work. You may do well with top water flies. That depends on the water temperature in the lake you are fishing.
Fall colors are beautiful and have peaked in the high elevations. Visitors and locals are enjoying the mountains. Traffic is fairly heavy in town. The streams are flowing well. We are having a pretty Fall.
It is going to be chilly this weekend with highs in the 50’s and 60’s during the day, possibly falling to the high 30’s Friday and Saturday night. Frost is predicted in the high elevations Saturday morning. The low may dip to the 20’s at Mount LeConte Friday night.
I will be writing about snow in the mountains soon.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
