Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 36.0 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the mid-60’s. Temperatures will fall to the low 40’s tonight. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 70’s. No rain is predicted today or tomorrow.
Most locations in the Smoky Mountains are currently under a freeze warning with temperatures ranging in the 20’s to 30’s in the higher elevations.
Little River is flowing at 162 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.90 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 54.1 degrees this morning and falling.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal but at good fishable levels. Water temperatures have fallen to the low 50’s and they are still falling.
Fishing will be best later today, when the streams warm. Nymphs will probably work best though trout may be taking dry flies.
Lowland rivers are flowing well. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other lowland species may be slow, at least early. The water is cool this morning. Again, wait until later today after the streams have warmed. Streamers and nymphs are good fly choices. Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers will be good today.
Tailwater trout anglers do have a few options in east and middle Tennessee. Check the TVA website to see the generation schedules and determine what your options are today. If you are boating, you have more choices.
Lake fishing will be best early or late when the sun is off the water. Streamers and swimming nymphs are probably your beg, though it is possible top water flies will produce strikes. The wind will be calm today and tomorrow, which is favorable.
I would plan on using a heavily weighted Wooly Bugger, weighted dragonfly nymph or a small shad pattern and I would retrieve them slowly.
Jack and I built stud walls and hung sheetrock on the top level of the store this week. We are building small offices, a new photography studio and enlarging the fly tying department by one third.
I am happy to be handling shop duties this weekend instead of construction work. I’m exhausted. I do plan to take off at noon today so I can watch the Kentucky/Tennessee football game. I will be ordering fly tying materials tomorrow, something that has to be done every week.
The guys in the shop received and displayed this week’s fly tying orders which was extremely helpful. That will continue until the remodeling is finished.
A woman from Virginia was charged with illegally “hand feeding” a bear in Gatlinburg while on vacation. Though this is a misdemeanor, she faces the possibility of six months in jail or a $500 fine. The offense was recorded and shared on TikTok and it went viral, viewed over a half million times. You can read more on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
