Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 50.7 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 70’s, falling to the low 50’s tonight. Each day this week through Thursday will be warm, sunny and dry.
Little River is flowing at 141 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.82 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 81 cfs. The water temperature is 52.3 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Normal in October is low so do not expect high flows. Water temperatures are good in the low to mid elevations.
The streams are very clear so stealth and presentation are paramount to your success. Dress to blend with the forest, try to stay hidden from the trout, and you will catch more.
Nymphs will produce for you. Dry flies may too. The water temps are well withing the trout’s preferred range so they will be actively feeding.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal but many are flowing low. Fishing will be fair for smallmouth bass and other lowland river species. Fishing will improve this week as the water warms. Fishing for trout in the stocked sections is very good. Fish the shaded areas in deeper pools and runs. Streamers and nymphs will probably work best.
Tailwater fishing options are limited today in east and middle Tennessee. There are some angler friendly flows planned at times. If you are boating there are more opportunities. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what is available for you today.
Bright sunny days are not ideal for those of us who fly fish on the lakes. Those are the conditions we can expect at least through Thursday. Go early or late and fish the shaded banks. Streamers and swimming nymphs will work. Top water flies may too.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the surrounding gateway towns are packed with people right now. I heard yesterday a trip around Cades Cove was expected to take four hours. We were busy at the shop this weekend. People are taking advantage of this beautiful weather and getting outside to enjoy this spectacular Fall.
Like most days lately, I will be going to the shop before daybreak to get an early start. I will be ordering for the fly tying department early before Jack arrives. Then, we’ll get back to work on the remodeling upstairs.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
