Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 68.2 degrees.
Rainfall yesterday was not as heavy as predicted. The Knoxville Airport reported .92 inches while in Townsend only .75 inches fell. It is raining now. We have had an additional .61 inches since midnight in Townsend. Heavy rain is falling now.
Weather websites are predicting rain today, at least until noon. Rainfall estimates range from 1 to 2 inches. We are under a flash flood advisory and a wind advisory today. Some roads in the Smokies are closed as falling trees are anticipated. Little River Road is closed from Townsend to Elkmont.
Little River is flowing at 264 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.22 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 114 cfs. The water temperature is 61.9 degrees this morning. The river is rising sharply.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 593 cfs, 2.27 feet, compared to median flow of 150 cfs. The river is rising.
Oconaluftee River is rising quickly. Flow is currently 934 cfs, 2.47 feet, compared to median flow of 218 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 253 cfs, 1.52 feet, compared to median flow of 92 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 159 cfs, 2.83 feet, which compares to median flow of 44 cfs for this date.
The West Prong of Little Pigeon River at Gatlinburg is rising fast. Flow is currently 749 cfs or 5.35 feet on the gauge.
Streams in the Smokies will be flowing very high today. High wind is predicted. Some roads are closed. This is not a good day to go fishing in the mountains.
Lowland Rivers will be flowing high today and most will probably be stained.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers appear to be holding back water at some dams today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with their generation schedules.
This is not a good lake fishing day. It will be windy, with gusts as high as 45 miles per hour.
This storm may not be as bad as was originally predicted, at least not in East Tennessee. We will have to wait and see what happens early today. If you are planning a fishing trip to the Smokies this weekend, you should check the USGS gauge sites later today or tomorrow morning, then make a decision.
