Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:57 am, the temperature is 39.7 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the upper 50’s, falling to the mid-40’s tonight. It will be mostly cloudy tomorrow with a low chance for rain and a high in the 50’s. Temps tomorrow night will fall to the high 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 761 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.12 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 89 cfs. The water temperature is 51.8 degrees this morning and falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,200 cfs, 3.01 feet, which compares to median flow of 146 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,120 cfs, 2.68 feet, compared to median flow of 210 cfs. The water temperature is 50.7 degrees and falling.
Tellico River is flowing at 508 cfs, 2.16 feet, compared to median flow of 79 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 215 cfs, 3.02 feet, compared to median flow of 42 cfs. The water temperature is 48.7 degrees and falling.
Streams in the Smokies are still flowing high today. They are receding and that will continue through the day. Additionally, water temperatures are plunging.
If you want to fish in the Smokies, look for smaller streams that have receded to a fishable level. Or, stand in safe water and high stick nymph rigs in the larger rivers. I would wait to go later after the water has warmed. Fishing will be better tomorrow as the stream levels recede. You may catch trout today in the Smokies but the conditions are not exactly favorable.
The lowland rivers are flowing high and swift. Be careful wading. Nymphs and streamers will work best for you.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at most dams all day and sluicing at some. I did see some breaks in the schedules at a couple of the dams I checked but I did not view all the TVA pages. Look yourself and see if your favorite tailwater is fishable today.
Lake fishing may be fair. Winds are predicted to be light and variable. It is going to be chilly out there so dress appropriately. I think streamers and swimming nymphs will work best. It will be sunny so go early or late for better fishing.
Jack and I have almost completed the fly tying department expansion. We installed the new lighting yesterday and hung more pegboard. All I have to do to finish is paint some pegboard and start moving materials and tools into the new area.
Jack won’t be back until Monday, giving me time to place this week’s orders today and tomorrow.
Next week, we will finish the new offices and the photography studio.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
