Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature is 42.3 degrees.
We are having a warm and beautiful weekend and no rain is predicted. We will enjoy highs in the 70’s and lows in the 50’s each day.
Little River is flowing at 181 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.97 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 134 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing slightly to moderately above normal. Water temperatures are trending up each day. Fishing conditions are good and improving. Nymphs are your best choice but dry flies may work too.
More important to your success is stealth and presentation. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more. Fish the choppy water where the trout are hiding, in runs, pockets and riffles.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal and at good wade fishing levels. Smallmouth bass and other lowland river species will be sluggish early today, but they should become more active later as the water warms. Streamers and nymphs are probably your best choice though you might want to at least try poppers, foam floating flies or hair bugs. Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers is good.
I did not see many generations schedules that are angler friendly for wade fishing in the tailwaters today. If you are boating there are more options. I did not check all the dams so visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with the generation schedules on your favorite tailwater.
Lake fishing is fair in some lakes. Wind should not be a problem for you today. Go early or late when the sun is off the water. Streamers or swimming nymphs are good fly choices. Top water flies might work for you. Give them a try.
This is going to be a beautiful day so you will probably see a good number of people fishing or boating. Leaf season is over but there will be plenty of people visiting the Smoky Mountains. I have seen a lot of campers driving through town.
Most of the leaves have fallen, giving us a different view of the mountains than we see during the Summer months. From our home, we can see mountains again. Our view is mountains that surround Cades Cove. We often see snow on the peaks when there is none in the valley. That gives me something to look forward to in late Fall and Winter.
I will be moving the photography studio at the shop today, to its new location created by the extensive remodel project at the shop. Tomorrow, I will place our weekly fly tying orders. November through February are our busiest fly tying months. We will be stocking heavily.
We will have plenty of customers in the shop this weekend, so I’ll wait until Monday to begin re-arranging the tying department that has been enlarged. I am looking forward to that.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
