Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 61.9 degrees.
Rain moved into the Smokies yesterday afternoon and continued to fall during the night. A personal weather station in Townsend reports 1.15 inches total, while Andrews, North Carolina received 1.36 inches.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the mid-60’s and a low tonight in the mid-40’s. It will be sunny each day through Saturday with no rain expected. There is a chance for rain Sunday. High temperatures will be in the 60’s with lows in the 40’s each day.
Little River is flowing at 359 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.45 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 154 cfs. The water temperature is 60.8 degrees and the river is rising.
Little Pigeon River is rising quickly. Currently, flow at the Sevierville gauge is 1,410 cfs, 3.21 feet, compared to median flow of 206 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,370 cfs, 2.94 feet, compared to median flow of 235 cfs. The river is rising.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 404 cfs, 3.52 feet, which compares to median flow of 53 cfs. The creek is rising quickly.
Tellico River has peaked and has begun to recede. Flow at the Tellico Plains gauge is 416 cfs, 1.95 feet, compared to median flow of 101 cfs.
As you can see, the streams with gauge sites are rising or have peaked. Some streams will continue to rise for a while today. I suspect the rivers will be too high to wade today. Many will be temporarily stained this morning. They will hopefully peak soon and begin to recede. Watch the USGS gauge sites before going fishing in the Smokies. Look for a reading of 2.5 feet at the Townsend gauge. At that level, Little River is on the high side of good.
Lowland rivers exiting the Smokies are flowing high and rising. Many are probably stained. This will not be a good lowland river fishing day.
There are not many wade fishing opportunities on the tailwaters today. I did see some flows that may be good for boat fishing.
Fishing in some lakes may be fair to good. It will be overcast which is a very good condition. Winds are not expected to exceed 5 miles per hour here in Townsend which could indicate the same further away. Streamers and swimming nymphs will probably work best. Poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs may produce too.
If you are planning to fish in the mountains this weekend, conditions should be fair to good. We will have a much better idea later today or tomorrow morning. Water temperatures will be cooler than they have been recently.
Colder air will move into the area Sunday night. We will see highs in the 50’s and lows in the 30’s through next Wednesday. It should be warmer again November 20th through the 26th.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
