Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature is 57.6 degrees.
Today and tomorrow will be sunny with high temperatures in the mid-60’s during the day and lows in the 40’s. Sunday will be partly sunny, in the mid 60’s again, with a chance for rain. Colder air will arrive Sunday night.
Little River is flowing at 283 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.27 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 141 cfs. The water temperature is 58.6 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is still flowing high at 1,520 cfs, or 3.30 feet on the gauge, which compares to normal flow of 193 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 757 cfs, 2.25 feet, compared to median flow of 220 cfs. The water temperature is 57.7 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 221 cfs, 1.42 feet, compared to median flow of 93 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 164 cfs, 2.85 feet, compared to median flow of 49 cfs for this date.
We still have high stream flows in some rivers, and not so high in others. Little River is flowing on the high side of good. Water temperatures remain unusually warm and well within the trout’s preferred range in the low to mid elevations. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best today.
Some lowland rivers are flowing at a good level. Others are flowing high. Water temperatures are fair for smallmouth bass and excellent for trout, where they are stocked. Nymphs and streamers are good choices.
From what I saw this morning, generation schedules do not look good for wade fishing on the tailwaters. As usual, I do not check every dam in middle and east Tennessee so look yourself to see what your options are. There are not many from what I could tell.
Lake fishing will be fair today. Go early or late when the sun is off the water. Wind should not be a problem until Sunday. Streamers and swimming nymphs are good choices.
Our fly tying department looks completely different. Almost all floor displays have been removed. Most materials and tools are now on the walls. We expanded the department by one third. This is a huge improvement over what you have seen before. Come by and check it out.
We are beefing up our inventory of materials and tools, preparing for the height of fly tying season, November through February.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
