Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:57 am, the temperature is 67.6 degrees.
The wind has been howling since 3 am. We can expect the wind to increase to 25 to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph in the mountains today. There is a good chance for rain early. The rain is not predicted to be heavy.
It will be mostly cloudy early, then gradually clearing this afternoon. The high temperature will be in the mid-60’s. So far, no roads in the Smokies have closed due to downed trees.
Little River is flowing at 218 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.09 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 143 cfs. The water temperature is 51.4 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal but at good fishable levels. Water temperatures are in the trout’s preferred range in the low to mid elevations.
Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are barely within the preferred range of smallmouth bass. If you are planning to fish for trout in the stocked sections of lowland rivers, fishing should be good. Streamers and nymphs are good choices.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers plan to generate at most dams today. I did not see any wade fishing options below the dams I checked this morning. There may be some options so refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
There is no way I would be fishing on a lake today. It will probably be way too windy.
I think this is going to be a good fly tying day.
Will is going to start working with us in the fly tying department, part time. His first day will be Tuesday. He will be ordering and receiving merchandise, and helping me organize the department further. Will is an excellent fly angler and fly tyer. He also competes in fly fishing competitions. His Euro nymphing skills are very advanced.
We built an office for him when we remodeled upstairs. We also ordered a brand new iMac and other equipment for Will to use. Will is a good guy. I am looking forward to working with him.
I have learned much about fly fishing and tying from Will. I’m sure I will learn a lot more now.
A lot of new gear has arrived at the shop. Our first Fall shipment from Fishpond came in just in time for the holidays. New gear is coming in from our other manufacturers too.
You should come by and see the newly expanded fly tying department and the new gear that has arrived. Today might be a good day for that.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
