Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:57 am, the temperature is 35.8 degrees.
This is going to be a sunny, cool and breezy day. Expect a high temperature in the low 50’s falling to the upper 20’s tonight. It will warm some later this week and further this weekend. Saturday and Sunday’s high will be in the upper 60’s. No rain is predicted until possibly Sunday night.
Little River is flowing at 184 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.98 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 147 cfs. The water temperature is 45.8 degrees and falling.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are cool and plunging this morning. They may warm some later today, but probably not much. I would go later today, use nymphs and hope for the best.
Lowland river fishing is slow for smallmouth bass and other lowland species due to the cool water temperatures. Trout fishing in these rivers, where they are stocked is probably good. Nymphs and streamers will work best.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at every dam I checked this morning. I didn’t see any tailwater wade fishing opportunities. Check yourself and maybe you will find suitable conditions somewhere in middle or east Tennessee.
This will not be an ideal lake fishing day. The surface temperatures are falling, it will be sunny and windy. Weighted streamers and nymphs are your best fly choices.
Overall, this does not appear to be a good fishing day. You might catch trout in the mountains but don’t expect good fishing. You could do well fishing stocked lowland rivers.
Fishing conditions will improve some later this week.
Today is Will’s first day working at the shop. He will be helping me manage the fly tying department on a part-time basis. He and I both are looking forward to this. Today, we will place a huge order with Wapsi and some of our other suppliers, including Renzetti.
This is the beginning of fly tying season. We order from almost all of our suppliers every week during the busy times. We will be ordering from Wapsi twice each week. Keeping materials and tools in stock is a full time job. I think it will become more than a full time job as the department continues to grow.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
