Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 30.2 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 60’s. A warming trend is coming with highs in the upper 60’s Friday through Sunday and lows in the 40’s. The chance for rain is low through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 164 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.91 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 150 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees and falling.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauges are flowing at or slightly above normal. Water temperatures are cold and still falling this morning.
The water will warm somewhat today and through the weekend. Fishing will improve. I don’t know how warm the streams will be this weekend, but the warmer they are, the better the fishing will be. Nymphs will probably work best. I would fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. I would also wait a while before going fishing when the water begins to warm later in the day.
The next few days are going to be beautiful. Get out and enjoy the outdoors.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for smallmouth bass and other warmer water species due to the cold water temperatures. Trout fishing in the rivers, where they are stocked will improve as the water warms. Nymphs and streamers will work best for you.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams all day today. I did notice a break at Center Hill Dam for a few hours later today. I know we are all hoping for better tailwater wade fishing conditions and hopefully that will happen this weekend.
Lake fishing is probably fair. Winds are supposed to be fairly calm today. I would go early or late when the sun is off the water. Cast weighted streamers or swimming nymphs to the banks and retrieve slowly.
All we need right now is warmer water in the free flowing streams and less generation for better tailwater angling. Maybe we will have both this weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
