Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 39.0 degrees.
It will be sunny and warmer today with a high temperature in the mid to upper 60’s and a low tonight in the mid-40’s. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy and warm and a little breezy, with winds at 5 to 10 miles per hour. Expect rain tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 144 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 170 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at normal. Water temperatures will rise today and tomorrow. Fishing will improve. It would be nice to see the water temps reach or exceed 50 degrees. That may happen. I would plan to fish in the low elevations where the water will be warmer. Nymphs will probably work best. Trout feeding on the surface is a possibility, especially tomorrow.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass is slow due to the cool water conditions. If water temperatures exceed 50 degrees, fishing for smallies will improve some. If you plan to fish for trout where they are stocked in these rivers, fishing should be good. Nymphs and streamers are good choices no matter what you are fishing for in the lowland rivers.
There will be a wade fishing opportunities on at least two tailwaters today, including below Norris Dam and possibly Center Hill Dam. There are boat fishing options available to you on some tailwaters. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are today. I did not check the predicted flows at every dam.
Lake fishing is probably fair. Go early or late when the sun is off the water. Cast weighted streamers and swimming nymphs to the banks. Retrieve slowly. Tomorrow may be the best day to go due to the expected cloud cover. It may be a little breezy tomorrow, or maybe not.
It is going to be warm and nice both days this weekend. Fishing conditions have improved. Get out and go if you can.
We have not seen a bear around our house for about two weeks. For a while this year we were seeing them almost daily. There is no telling how many we didn’t see.
Paula and I planned to start feeding the birds Thanksgiving day, like we do every year. We hang four feeders on two posts during the day and bring them in at night. We feed sunflower hearts, which all birds love to eat.
It looks like Thanksgiving week is going to be warm, so we may delay the feeding until early December. Our bird feeding window of opportunity is only about 4 months, while the bears are denning or inactive. A bear can destroy a bird feeder with one swipe of a paw. They have done it before.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
