Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature is 42.1 degrees.
The high temperature yesterday was 71.1 degrees in Townsend. Today will be a little cooler with a high in the mid to upper 60’s. It will be mostly cloudy. Winds will be from the southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. No rain is predicted until tonight. A quarter to one half of an inch is possible.
Little River is flowing at 141 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.82 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 203 cfs. The water temperature is 47.3 degrees.
Other streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauges are flowing slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are on the cool side. Little River’s water temperature rose to almost 48 degrees yesterday.
Fishing is fair. Fish in the low elevation streams where the water is warmer. Nymphs will likely work best though there is a chance for blue wing olive and midge hatches. You could enjoy some dry fly action today but the chances are low that you will be in the right place at the right time.
The water is clear so stealth is very important to your success. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more. Dress to blend with the forest.
Water temperatures are in the high 40’s in the lowland rivers. Smallmouth bass and other lowland river species will probably be sluggish. Fishing for stocked trout in these rivers is fair to good.
There are some tailwater flows that you might be able to work with, especially if you are boating and possibly wade fishing. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are. Pay particular attention to the generation schedule at Norris Dam.
It will be mostly cloudy today, which is ideal for fly fishing on the lakes. It will be breezy at times. Weighted streamers and swimming nymphs will work best. Retrieve slowly.
