Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:58 am, the temperature is 31.3 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the mid 50’s, falling to around 40 degrees tonight. Showers are likely tomorrow with a high in the low 60’s. The rain is not expected to be heavy. Showers will continue through tomorrow night. Thanksgiving day will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the mid to upper 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 132 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.78 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 198 cfs. The water temperature is 45.5 degrees and falling.
Other streams in the Smokies are flowing slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are falling this morning.
Fishing may be fair and it could be good in the mountains today. I would wait a while to go, when the water temperatures bottom out and begin to warm. Nymphs will probably work best. Dry flies could work too. There is a chance you could catch a trout of a lifetime.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass will likely be slow today due to the chilly water temperatures. Trout fishing in these rivers, where they are stocked, will be fair to good.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers plan to generate all day at most of the dams I checked this morning. I didn’t see any wade fishing opportunities but I did not view every TVA web page. If you are boating, you may have more options. Check the list of dam releases yourself and you may find a tailwater fishing option in east or middle Tennessee.
This will be a fair lake fishing day. I prefer cloudy days but we will not see many clouds today. Winds will be calm. I would plan on launching early when the sun is off the water and cast weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Retrieve them slowly and deep. I typically use a 9’, leader with an 8 pound tippet when fishing for smallmouth bass. I would use fluorocarbon since I would probably not be fishing with top water flies.
We are busy at the shop this week. People are traveling to Townsend for the Thanksgiving holiday.
I read an interesting article this morning about a chicken called the Gallos de Leon. This species is the oldest known bird, grown for feathers used to tie trout flies. They have been raised for that purpose for centuries in Spain.
I found the article on the Earth Island Journal website. You can read it by CLICKING HERE. This article is very interesting.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
