Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 50.4 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature around 60 degrees. Tonight will be clear and colder, with a low in the mid to upper 30’s. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy and warm again. Rain will move into the area Sunday night and last through at least Monday night. There is a fair chance for snow showers Monday night.
Little River is flowing at 127 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.76 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 235 cfs. The water temperature is 49.5 degrees this morning.
Though Little River is flowing a little below normal, most other streams are flowing at or slightly above normal. Water temperatures are fair in the low elevations. Fishing will be fair today. I would fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass is slow to fair due to the water temperatures. Fishing for trout where they are stocked in the lowland rivers is good. Nymphs and streamers are excellent choices.
TVA and the Corps are planning to generate at most dams today with some exceptions. Check the generation schedules at Norris and Center Hill Dams. There may be other tailwaters that can be fished by wading. If you are boating, there are more options.
Fly fishing on the lakes is probably fair. Winds will be calm today and tomorrow. I would choose tomorrow to fish because it will be overcast. I would cast to the banks using heavily weighted Wooly Buggers or threadfin shad imitations. Fish deep and retrieve slow.
We are going to enjoy a couple of pretty and comfortable days this weekend. Beginning Monday, it is going to be very cold. Water temperatures will fall in the free flowing rivers. Fishing will slow as the water cools. Tailwater fishing is probably your best bet after this weekend, if you can work with the generation schedules.
We are stocked and staffed at the shop. Holiday shopping for fly anglers has begun. Gift card purchases are very popular right now. You can buy gift cards on our online store, by calling us at 865-448-9459, or in person at the shop. They can be redeemed online, by phone or in person.
Our tackle selection offers you many gift choices. Fly tyers are enjoying our newly remodeled and expanded fly tying department. Will and I are working diligently to keep the tying department stocked for you. We know fly tying is very popular during the Winter months and we are prepared.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
