Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature is 36.5 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the low 60’s. We have a chance for rain this afternoon and a high chance tonight, with rainfall accumulations between a half and three quarters of an inch. Rain will continue tomorrow with a high temperature in the mid-40’s dropping to the mid-30’s late in the afternoon. Rain may change to snow tomorrow night. Less than an inch of snow is predicted in the valley.
Little River is flowing at 119 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.73 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 239 cfs. The water temperature is 47.3 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing at or less than normal.
Fishing will be fair today in the Park. Nymphs will probably work best. There is a chance for a blue wing olive or midge hatch so be prepared if you are fortunate enough to be at the right spot if that occurs.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for smallmouth bass. If you are fishing for trout where they are stocked in these rivers, fishing will be good. Streamers and nymphs are your best fly choices.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at Norris and Center Hill Dams. You may have a shot at wade fishing on these rivers but check the schedule before going. There may be other wade fishing opportunities in east and middle Tennessee today. If you are boating, there are more options.
Winds will be calm today with overcast skies, making for a fairly good lake fishing day. Cast to the banks with streamers, fished deep with a slow retrieve.
It appears we will see snowfall in the mountains over the next couple of days. Leaves have fallen from the trees so we finally have the Winter mountain view from our house. I expect we will see white mountains again Wednesday after this front passes through. That is always nice to see.
Paula and I have been feeding the birds again during the day and bringing the feeders in at night. We are hoping a bear will not walk by and find them. One of our neighbors visited us yesterday. She told us a bear was in our garden when she drove by. Hopefully this cold front will encourage the bears to den. We have not seen a bear in at least two weeks. They normally den in December.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
