Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 32.4 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 50’s, falling to the low 30’s tonight. We may have snow showers early tomorrow morning before turning to rain.
Most roads in the Park are open, including Newfound Gap Road.
Little River is flowing at 406 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.55 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 246 cfs. The water temperature is 42.4 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 935 cfs, 2.73 feet, which compares to median flow of 328 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 649 cfs, 2.09 feet, compared to median flow of 409 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 407 cfs, 1.93 feet, compared to median flow of 178 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 133 cfs, 2.73 feet, which compares to median flow of 82 cfs for this date.
The rivers have receded since yesterday morning but we still have plenty of water flowing out of the Smoky Mountains. Little River’s level is what we consider to be on the high side of good. Water temperatures are chilly. Trout will be lethargic for the most part. Post spawn brown trout will be active.
Wade in safe areas and high stick heavily weight nymphs. You may catch some trout but fishing will not be great today.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for smallmouth bass due to the cold water temperatures. Wading will be limited in most of these larger rivers. You might catch trout where they are stocked. Nymphs and streamers are good fly choices.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams today. Wade fishing options on the tailwaters are limited. If you are boating, you will have more tailwater fishing opportunities.
You could go fishing on a lake. It should not be windy today. Try weighted streamers. Cast to the banks, let them sink and retrieve slowly. Some anglers use sinking fly lines. I have a rig set up with a sinking line for lake fishing but rarely use it. My streamer choices would be heavily weighted Wooly Buggers and threadfin shad patterns.
Fishing may not be excellent right now but you can go and enjoy the outdoors. Spring will be here before we know it.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
