Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 43.5 degrees.
We have a chance for rain today and it could be windy. Temperatures will fall and the rain may change to snow flurries late today. Snow is expected to accumulate in the mountains which are under a winter weather advisory. Two to four inches is expected above 2,500 feet with four to six inches above 4,000 feet. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 40’s.
Much warmer temperatures are coming later this week. We may see highs in the low 60’s Thursday and Friday.
US Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) closed last night in anticipation of ice and snow today.
Little River is flowing at 336 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.40 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 220 cfs. The water temperature is 44.4 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauges are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are chilly. If you go today, plan to fish in the lowest elevations. There is a chance roads will be slick in the Park, especially in the higher elevations and more roads could close. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for smallmouth bass. Fishing will be better where trout are stocked.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams nearby today. Wade fishing options are limited in east and middle Tennessee. If you are boating, there are more choices. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what options are available to you.
This is not going to be a good lake fishing day. Not only will you get wet, it will be cold and windy with gusts up to 20 miles per hour according to the National Weather Service.
Our friend Walter Babb is a very well known bamboo rod maker and fly tyer. Every year, he makes a rod to be auctioned in Sweetwater, Tennessee for charity. The Needy Family Fund Auction raises money to feed people in their town. The auction this year has been called off.
Walter made the rod and tied flies that would have been auctioned. Instead, he will sell these items and the funds will go to the charity.
