Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 31.5 degrees.
Today and tomorrow will be sunny dry and warm with a high temperature in the low to mid-60’s. The low tonight will be in the upper 30’s. Beginning tomorrow night, lows will be in the 40’s through Saturday night. Saturday will be warm again, with a chance for showers.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.11 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 231 cfs. The water temperature is 40.3 degrees.
Most, if not all rivers and streams in the Smokies are flowing at normal today.
Water temperatures are currently cold. We will see the temps rise over the next few days. Fishing will improve. Nymphs will probably work best for you. There is a chance you will happen upon some hatches over the next few days. I would have some blue wing olive emergers and dry flies in my box.
Lowland river fishing is slow due to the cold water temperatures. Smallmouth bass are inactive. We may see some improvement by the weekend. I am hoping for 50 degrees. That is probably not likely. Fishing for trout where they are stocked will be better. Nymphs and streamers are good choices.
I saw a couple of tailwater wade fishing opportunities this morning but not many. I did not check the schedules at all dams. Norris and Center Hill dams will have some interesting flows today. Check those schedules from the links below and take a look at your favorite tailwater. You may find wade or boat fishing options.
If you are hoping to fly fish on a lake, the conditions look good today and tomorrow. Winds will be light. It may be breezy Saturday. You may find decent fishing on some lakes. I am not a Winter lake angler anymore, so I don’t know what to expect. I would cast streamers to the banks. They would be heavily weighted and retrieved slowly.
We are going to have a couple of beautiful days to go fishing today and tomorrow. Hopefully you can get out there and go.
We will be busy at the shop this weekend, selling gifts for the holidays and hopefully to customers who are going fishing. Gift cards are high on the list of items we will be selling over the next few days.
Will and I are missing an order he placed with Firehole on December 2nd. The box of hooks and beads appears to have shipped from Bozeman that day and sent to the regional USPS office in Billings, MT. I think it is lost in Billings. We will re-order today unless it arrived last night at our post office. Our normal turnaround from Firehole is four days. We are only out of a couple of items so far. We order from Firehole about every two weeks.
We have three fly tying material orders placed with Wapsi. One has shipped. We will be ordering from Wapsi at least twice each week through the fly tying season and possibly three times a week. Orders from other companies will be weekly for a while.
We are doing well at keeping the fly tying department stocked for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

Buy a Walter Babb made bamboo fly rod or his beautiful 10- dozen flies for charity.
“Due to Covid-19, there will not be a Needy Family Fund Auction this year. I made a rod and tied some flies for the Auction this Spring, so I will be selling them and the proceeds will go to the Needy Family Fund.
Th rod is an 8’ 0” 2 piece 6-weight Stan’s Blackfoot, a great taper from Stan Smartt. This is a single tip rod. The price is $850 plus sales tax.
There is also a box of 10 dozen of my favorite nymphs and wet flies. The price is $253.95 plus sales tax if you are a Tennessee resident.
If interested, call Walter Babb at 423-337-6772. I have many other rods, in case someone wants a rod for lighter lines or a shorter small stream type rod.”
Walter
