Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 48.4 degrees.
This will be another Spring-like day, mostly sunny with a high temperature near 60 degrees. Winds will be light. Rain will move into the area with colder temperatures tonight. Expect a wintery mix or snow in the mountains tonight and tomorrow. Rainfall amounts between one and two inches are possible tonight with another half inch tomorrow. More rain is coming Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.11 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 166 cfs. The water temperature is 48.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at normal this morning. Cataloochee Creek, Tellico River and Oconaluftee River are rising.
Fishing conditions will be good today though there is the possibility for stained water in some streams early. Water temperatures have risen to near 50 degrees in the low elevations. We will likely see the water warm further today.
Fishing is fair to good. Trout are active when the water temperatures reach the high 40’s and into the low 50’s. Nymphs will probably work best today. Fish the lowest elevations where the water is warmer.
Lowland river fishing could be fair today for smallmouth bass. Fishing for trout in the lowland rivers, where they are stocked, will be good. Nymphs and streamers are good choices.
There are a few breaks in the generation schedules at some dams in east and middle Tennessee today. You may find some wade fishing options by referring to the TVA website from the links below. If you are boat fishing, you will have more options.
Lake fishing with fly rods may be fair today. It will not be windy. It will be warm and sunny. Heavily weighted streamers may work for some species. Every lake and areas within lakes are different. Water temperatures vary. You may be targeting trout, bass, stripers or other species in our many impoundments in the region.
I am a big fan of fly fishing for bass (especially smallmouth) in the lakes. I am not a Winter lake fisherman anymore. If I were, I would use heavily weighted streamers and cast to the rocky banks. Good streamer choices for me are large weighted Wooly Buggers and Puglisi Threadfin shad imitations.
This is going to be a beautiful day to be fishing. The weather system coming our way next is not going to be angler friendly is some cases. I would go today.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

Buy a Walter Babb made bamboo fly rod or his beautiful 10- dozen flies for charity.
“Due to Covid-19, there will not be a Needy Family Fund Auction this year. I made a rod and tied some flies for the Auction this Spring, so I will be selling them and the proceeds will go to the Needy Family Fund.
Th rod is an 8’ 0” 2 piece 6-weight Stan’s Blackfoot, a great taper from Stan Smartt. This is a single tip rod. The price is $850 plus sales tax.
There is also a box of 10 dozen of my favorite nymphs and wet flies. The price is $253.95 plus sales tax if you are a Tennessee resident.
If interested, call Walter Babb at 423-337-6772. I have many other rods, in case someone wants a rod for lighter lines or a shorter small stream type rod.”
