Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 46.0 degrees.
Heavy rain is falling, which began at about 2:00 am. So far, 1.38 inches of rain has been recorded near our home just outside Townsend. The rain will continue until later this morning. Rain will change to snow in the mountains today with accumulations of up to two inches in the higher elevations. The high temperature today will be what it is now. It will be cold tonight, in the upper 20’s. Tuesday will be sunny and warmer, with a high around 50 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 279 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.26 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 258 cfs. The river is rising sharply. The water temperature is 47.8 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is rising quickly. Flow is currently 797 cfs or 2.56 feet at the Sevierville gauge. Median flow for this date is 352 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is rising fast at the Birdtown gauge. Flow is 698 cfs, 2.16 feet, compared to median flow of 464 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 298 cfs, 1.65 feet, compared to median flow of 213 cfs. The river is rising.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 146 cfs, 2.78 feet, compared to median flow of 84 cfs. The creek is rising quickly.
The West Prong of the Little Pigeon River at Gatlinburg is flowing at 127 cfs, 3.59 feet, and the river is rising quickly
It appears we will have high water in the Smokies today. Streams may be stained. I guess it is possible that some streams will recede to a safe wading level later today after the rain moves through. I really do not think that is likely. We will have to wait to see what happens. Check the USGS flow gauges before you go.
Lowland river fishing will be slow today. These rivers will likely be flowing high and possibly stained.
I saw a few tailwater fishing options today, especially if you are boating. TVA predicts no generation at Norris Dam for a long period today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing opportunities are.
It will be chilly, wet and a little breezy, not great conditions for fly fishing on the lakes. It will be overcast which will be helpful. If you go, streamers will work best. Try a heavily weighted Wooly Bugger or a Puglisi Threadfin Shad imitation.
We all enjoyed a beautiful weekend. We saw a lot of people going fishing. We were busy at the shop. Gift cards are selling very well, both in the store and online. I spent the day yesterday ordering fly tying materials, tying tools and organizing our backstock of spooled items, mostly thread. To keep the department well stocked, I am ordering from our largest fly tying supplier two to three times per week. It is fly tying season.
We have a large order shipping from Whiting Farms this week. I think this is the largest order we have ever made from the company.
It is 5:57 am and the rain just stopped. Maybe the heavy rain has passed. The overnight rainfall total is now 1.58 inches. Little River is flowing at 363 cfs, 2.46 feet and still rising fast.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

Buy a Walter Babb made bamboo fly rod or his beautiful 10- dozen flies for charity.
“Due to Covid-19, there will not be a Needy Family Fund Auction this year. I made a rod and tied some flies for the Auction this Spring, so I will be selling them and the proceeds will go to the Needy Family Fund.
Th rod is an 8’ 0” 2 piece 6-weight Stan’s Blackfoot, a great taper from Stan Smartt. This is a single tip rod. The price is $850 plus sales tax.
There is also a box of 10 dozen of my favorite nymphs and wet flies. The price is $253.95 plus sales tax if you are a Tennessee resident.
If interested, call Walter Babb at 423-337-6772. I have many other rods, in case someone wants a rod for lighter lines or a shorter small stream type rod.”
Walter
