Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:07 am, the temperature is 54.7 degrees.
The wind blew all night with gusts up to 23 miles per hour near our home. Light rain is falling now. Heavier rain is coming as the cold front passes through this afternoon. Rainfall up to or above 1.5 inches is expected today.
Rain will change to snow later today as temperatures fall. Snowfall in the mountains may amount to 4 to 8 inches today and tonight at the highest elevations. There will be less snow in the valley. Today’s high temperature will be what it is now. Tonight’s low will be in the upper teens. The high temperature Christmas day is predicted to be in the mid to upper 20’s, falling to the low to mid-teens overnight. Saturday will be sunny with a high in the low 40’s.
It looks like we will have a white Christmas. Check out the weather forecast for Mount LeConte by CLICKING HERE. The Winter caretaker there is definitely going to have a white and extremely cold Christmas.
US Highway 441 ( Newfound Gap Road) is currently closed due to high winds. More roads may close in the Park by tomorrow morning because of snow, ice and downed trees.
Little River is flowing at 246 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.09 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 297 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees and rising.
Fishing could be fair in the Smokies as the water temperatures are rising. The wind has died down for now. More high winds are expected, with gusts to 70 miles per hour at the high elevations. I would not go.
Heavy rain is falling now. Streams will rise today and may become stained.
I slept later this morning because the store will be closed. I don’t have to go in a 7:00 am to disinfect the surfaces we share until Saturday morning.
We will be closed today and tomorrow to celebrate Christmas. We have not closed on Christmas Eve since 1995. We are usually open only three hours on the December 24th. Friends usually stop by and hang out and we all have a good time but that probably would not happen this year and I decided to close.
I will not be writing a fishing report tomorrow morning.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us. Merry Christmas!

WE WILL BE CLOSED THURSDAY CHRISTMAS EVE AND FRIDAY CHRISTMAS DAY. WE WILL ALSO CLOSE NEW YEARS DAY.
Buy a Walter Babb made bamboo fly rod or his beautiful 10- dozen flies for charity.
“Due to Covid-19, there will not be a Needy Family Fund Auction this year. I made a rod and tied some flies for the Auction this Spring, so I will be selling them and the proceeds will go to the Needy Family Fund.
Th rod is an 8’ 0” 2 piece 6-weight Stan’s Blackfoot, a great taper from Stan Smartt. This is a single tip rod. The price is $850 plus sales tax.
There is also a box of 10 dozen of my favorite nymphs and wet flies. The price is $253.95 plus sales tax if you are a Tennessee resident.
If interested, call Walter Babb at 423-337-6772. I have many other rods, in case someone wants a rod for lighter lines or a shorter small stream type rod.”
