Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:48 am, the temperature is 11.8 degrees.
Snow fell Christmas Eve with snow flurries remaining Christmas Day. Snowfall totals amounted to 3.2 inches at the Knoxville Airport, over 12 inches at Mount LeConte and about 4 inches at our home.
It will be sunny and warmer later with a high in the upper 30’s. Tonight will be clear with a low in the mid to low 20’s. Sunday will be sunny and warm with a high in the low to mid 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 842 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.14 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 307 cfs. The water temperature is 39.2 degrees this morning at the low elevation gauge site near Townsend.
Streams are flowing considerably higher than normal for this date. Water temperatures are cold. For instance, the water temperature at Cataloochee Creek is 33.4 degrees while the gauge at Oconaluftee River is reporting 34.3 degrees.
Some roads in the Park are closed, including Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road and Laurel Creek Road.
Fishing will be slow today in the Smokies due to the cold water temperatures.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for the same reason.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are. If you are boating, you may have more opportunities.
I checked Old Cades Cove Road yesterday and it had been treated and was clear. Friends of ours were driving around Townsend yesterday without incident except for fallen trees or trees that were bent due to the heavy snow. I removed some tree limbs that were blocking our private road yesterday, so I could drive to work today.
The long term weather forecast through January 9th looks good. It will be warm most days and fairly warm at night through the period. The high temperature New Years Eve should be around 60 degrees, with rain. Of course, the forecast could change.
I hope you all had a great Christmas and thank you for being here with us.
