Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 24.8 degrees.
It will be foggy early and sunny later today with a high temperature in the upper 40’s to low 50’s, falling to the 30’s tonight. It will be cloudy tomorrow with a high in the upper 40’s. Warmer air will move into the region later this week with highs in the mid to high 50’s Wednesday through Friday.
Little River is flowing at 631 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.86 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 286 cfs. The water temperature is 40.3 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal. The streams are cold. Fishing will be slow in most streams. Fishing will be slow until the water warms. If you go, nymphs will work best.
Lowland river fishing is slow due to the cold water temperatures.
There are breaks in the generation scheduled at a few dams today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are today. If you are boating you may have more.
It appears on the Park’s Roads Twitter page, many roads are closed in the Smokies. To be sure there was no update problem on Twitter, I called the Park’s information center this morning to get a voice verification on road closures. Here are the roads that heard are closed due to snow and ice:
US Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road)
Laurel Creek Road to Cades Cove
Cades Cove Loop Road
Little River Road from Sugarlands to the Townsend “Y”
Tremont Road
Foothills Parkway East and West
There are others.
Hopefully some of these roads will re-open today.
We do have many visitors in the areas surrounding Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These visitors were rewarded with a white Christmas. Unfortunately, slick road conditions on secondary roads leading to some cabins caused problems yesterday. I also heard power outages were and may remain a problem in both Knox and Sevier County.
We got 4 to 5 inches of snow at our house but the roads were in good shape yesterday from here to the shop. Heavier snow fell in the higher elevations. It was very cold yesterday morning, 11 degrees at our house. The expected sun and warmer temperatures will soon remedy the negative effects caused by the Christmas storm.
The long term weather forecast looks good through January 10th, with fairly warm to warm temperatures expected and no snow predicted. We will be getting rain.
The days are becoming longer. Spring fishing may not be that far off. We have enjoyed good fishing in February in some recent past years. Maybe this will be one of them.
People are certainly tying flies and our newly expanded fly tying department has been very busy. The department is stocked well and re-stocked weekly. Word is getting around. We currently have about 1/3 of the fly tying items we sell on our online store. We intend to continue adding more materials and tools to the online store through the Winter.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
