Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:11 am, the temperature is 37.2 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 40’s, falling to the mid-30’s tonight. Much warmer air will move into the region tomorrow with a high in the mid-50’s. Highs Thursday and Friday will be in the 60’s. Rain will arrive Thursday and last through New Years Day. One to three inches of rain is possible during the period with locally heavier amounts.
Little River is flowing at 496 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.64 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 317 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees this morning.
The streams will warm over the next few days. Melting snow will stall the warming of the streams temporarily so be aware of that. Sometimes we expect to see the water warm quickly and forget that can be delayed by melting snow.
Fishing will improve in the Smokies. We may not enjoy good fishing but it will at least improve. The down side is the possibility for heavy rain, high water and staining by New Years Day.
Weighted nymphs will probably work best today.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for smallmouth bass but improving for stocked trout as the week progresses. Again, heavy rain could spoil fishing later this week.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most if not all dams in our area. They are probably anticipating the heavy rain expected later this week and preparing with more water storage capacity in the lakes. I did not check every schedule. Look at the generation schedules from the links below to see if there are options on your favorite tailwater today.
The snow has mostly melted in the low elevations. The caretaker at LeConte Lodge reported over 12 inches of snow fell there Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Most roads have re-opened, including Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road, Laurel Creek Road and the Cades Cove Loop Road.
We have many visitors in town for the holidays. I heard yesterday, the Cades Cove Loop Road was backed up and packed with vehicles this weekend after those roads re-opened.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
