Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 29.3 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high in the low 50’s, falling to the mid-30’s tonight. It will be overcast tomorrow with a low chance for rain, turning to snow in the higher elevations tomorrow night. Wednesday will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 496 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.64 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 345 cfs. The water temperature is 46.0 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are plunging. Fishing will slow in the Smokies this week due to the colder water temperatures.
If you go, plan on using weighted nymphs.
Fishing in the lowland rivers will slow this week. Your best chance will be fishing for stocked trout. Nymphs and streamers may work.
TVA and the Corps plan to generate today at most dams. There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams including Center Hill and South Holston. There may be others. Check the TVA schedules from the links below. You may find some opportunities today.
We enjoyed beautiful weather and fairly good fishing conditions over the New Year Holiday. The long term forecast indicates we are sliding back into normal Winter weather. At this point it appears we’ll have colder temperatures, but not bitter cold through January 18th. Expect highs in the 40’s with lows at night falling to the high 20’s to low 30’s. We may see snow at times, especially in the higher elevations.
Business at the shop will slow until Spring. The fly tying department will be busy though. I went through almost 1,000 items this weekend in our inventory management system, picked out the best sellers and increased the desired inventory substantially in some cases. One very large order will go out today. More larger orders will be placed tomorrow. The fly tying department was “slammed” last week. We have three orders placed with Renzetti. I think two will arrive today with another coming by Thursday. Last year was a Renzetti year.
Fishing Spring may not be that far off. Sometimes it happens in February and other years in March. We will be waiting for the water temperatures to reach near 50 degrees. When that temperature is sustained for a few days, the Spring hatches will begin. We will see Quill Gordons, Blue Quills, Blue Wing Olives and other aquatic insect adults on the water. Trout will be slurping them down. We are all looking forward to that.
We have been through this cycle for a quarter century. We know what is coming. We will spend the next few weeks preparing for Spring and maintaining the fly tying department.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
