Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 31.3 degrees.
Today and tomorrow will be partly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 40’s. Rain and snow showers are predicted Friday with a high temperature around 40 degrees, falling to the high 20’s at night. The weekend will be partly to mostly sunny and remain cold.
Little River is flowing at 382 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.42 feet on the gauge. Media flow for this date is 307 cfs. The water temperature is 45.1 degrees.
Water temperatures will continue to be cool to cold through the week. Fishing in the Smokies will not be good, but catching a trout or two is possible. Fishing using weighted nymph rigs will probably be your best bet.
Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Lowland river fishing will slow further through the week. Smallmouth bass will be inactive. Stocked trout may be somewhat active. Nymphs and egg patterns will work best for trout.
I have not checked the generation schedules at all dams in the region this morning. Of those I did view, only two had breaks in the schedules, Center Hill and South Holston. Look at the TVA schedules from the links below to see if there is a tailwater you can fish today. There are more options if you are boating.
It is obvious to me and other business owners, visitation in Townsend is very low. It is always this way the week after the New Year holiday. It will stay that way for a few weeks.
Anglers will return when the water warms. Our business is always better in February, than it is in January. Customers begin preparing for fishing Spring in February. Those who tie flies are the customers we see most in January.
By the way, orders placed for the fly tying department in late December are arriving. Two showed up yesterday and I am hoping to see more today and tomorrow. The shippers seem to be catching up from the holiday overload.
Jack and I were planning to go to town today to buy materials to build an office downstairs. He called me last night and we decided to postpone until Monday. I love working on projects with Jack, who is also one of my best friends. Jack is a retired home builder with amazing skills.
He is also “super organized”. He always has the day planned in his mind. Things get done quicker than I expect every day when I am helping Jack. He is also an excellent delegator though he does keep an eye on what I am doing.
Jack is one of if not the best angler I have fished with in my life. When we go fishing together, he always catches more than I do.
We worked together for a few weeks in October, expanding the fly tying department. Jack does all the thinking and I am his helper. We have another improvement for the fly tying department planned this year which will add 24 feet of new wall display space.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
